Our Belated Christmas Story

Just to clarify, our Christmas story has no tales of family or food, memories or moments; we did have all of that and more this Christmas, and I am so grateful each year for those experiences. Due to hosting and all that comes with that is why I am a week behind in writing this. Almost two years since my last post. It's been busy. 2019 started today and so does a new story for us all. I miss writing and so, my word (I hate resolutions!) for this year is STORYTELLING. And so, it begins...

My family was at church the Sunday before Christmas Eve and our pastor shared an analogy of The Grinch in comparison to true joy. Just to clarify, the Grinch was not at all joyful for the most part but the morning after stealing all the toys and good eats, the Grinch heard down in the valley the true spirit of Christmas, the music, the love, the joy all had within and even the the one with no heart  suddenly felt joy in his. We all know the story. This was shared at our church an hour before my family and I would witness and experience true joy.
How, you ask? Well, rewind two and a half years, back to the summer of 2016, our family had a fantastic vacation in Georgia that began with a large family wedding followed by several days with good friends that had recently moved from South Dakota to Peachtree City, Georgia. Four daughters between theirs and ours and us four adults enjoyed sunshine, swimming, good food and all the local flair that we were able to experience with our friends who are now new locals to the area. Such fun, true joy. After over a week we were headed home, back to reality, but ready for it indeed. All was going smoothly until our layover in Chicago, where O'Hare had basically shut down for no apparent reason.
Our layover of two hours turned into four, five, and beyond. People were frustrated and misinformed, particularly the United employees whose role was to be customer serving, which exacerbated the whole ordeal. Eric waited in a line with no end as more hours passed. We were herded to one gate and then told to go to another, still with no insight as to why we had no initial flight in the first place. Our family, in addition to the entire O'Hare airport, was in wait. And so we sat and I happened to sit down next to an elderly woman who seemed to be traveling alone.
I asked where she was headed and to my surprise, her destination was ours, Sioux Falls, SD. She proceeded to tell me she was on her way home from visiting family in Germany and traveling alone, her husband had passed several years ago. I explained our scenario and told her whatever Eric found out we would keep her informed and close by. All I could think was how afraid my mom be under similar circumstances, who turns out to be almost twenty years younger than our new friend, Carol.
Fast forward an hour or so and our family had secured one of the last large rental suburbans to be had in the metro of Chicago due to fire and weather, which is why all flights were cancelled. In this same hour I had witnessed the United help desk tell Carol, in the most belittling and rude tone, "Just sit down and be quiet, we will tell you what's going on when we know what's going on." While I am a fairly laid back individual but in my book of morals this gal had gone way past any form of acceptable in her treatment of Carol. I stood up, shared my thoughts with United, and told Carol we were going to get her home. I asked if she'd want to hop a ride with us from Chicago since she lived in Luverne, MN, which was right on our way home and without any regret, she said she'd love to join our journey!
About thirty minutes later we were walking out of the rental office and literally ran into a friend I used to work with, Kathy, and a coworker of hers, also stranded on their way home from a meeting and of course, we asked them to join the party. And so, began our eight hour road trip home. Lots of conversation, naps, and bathroom breaks, and we safely delivered all to their homes in the middle of the night that summer of 2016. Little did I know in our exhaustion, hunger, and need to finally feel at home would spark joy that would continue to burn into this holiday season.

This past Thursday before Christmas, with so little time and so much to do, Eric received a call from Carol. I had intended to get Carol's address when we dropped her off at 3AM but failed to and in the following weeks before school started I wanted to follow up with her, make sure she was okay, but, undeniably, time just got away from me. It got away from all of us. Well, everyone but Carol. She had been looking for us since we dropped her off and finally, over two years later, she and Eric were chatting on the phone like old friends and invited us to her 90th birthday party this Sunday, the day before Christmas Eve. And of course, we helped her celebrate!
And this is our Christmas story for so many reasons. Coincidence is not a thing in my world, Carol and I didn't accidentally sit next to each other at O'Hare; kindness is intentional and I can assure you my family and Carol's felt a great deal more joy than the inadequate customer service reps that work at United in Chicago; and the joy at Carol's birthday party could be felt in my family's soul, among perfect strangers, and these are experiences I pray my daughters carry into their adult lives and memories I will seek to feel joy from when my moments may feel less than joyful.
I'm eager for the stories 2019 will bring and I'm proud to have a new authentic Facebook friend, Carol. Thank you, Carol, for reminding me and my family the true joy and spirit of  Christmas.

Feels Like Home

Exhaustion settles in as I sink into my seat at LAX. It's been a long week of meetings, a long few months of training, topped off with a few much needed fun days with my family here in Los Angeles.

This last year or so has been one of both getting lost and self discovery, literally. I left my long lost career of comfort with Eli Lilly selling pharmaceuticals for diabetes. I was burnt out of feeling like I could not do enough to serve my customers and their patients. I was burnt out from being the token diabetic among my peers and management. Growing up with my self title of token diabetic in a rural North Dakota town was fine. It was incredible, actually. I knew my coach and friends had my back at basketball games and track meets by always knowing where the glucose tabs were or even holding a cup of Coke for me as I circled the 400 meter lap 8 times, people within my community understood enough to have something unique for me while trick or treating at Halloween to make me feel just like everyone else,  and my BFF had an in to get me a peanut butter and/or jelly sandwich at the drop of a hat anytime of day from the lunch ladies. Small towns really are like what the country songs make them out to be, at least mine was...

But being the token diabetic at work is different, difficult actually. Even though I was immersed among all of these people who sold in the industry of diabetes, only a few of us lived with it or had a family member or close friend with type 1 diabetes. No disrespect to anyone anywhere but you need that criteria to truly get it. I know I stand united among my peers who have to have insulin to survive in that statement. So I chose to leave that behind by leaving the human side of pharmaceuticals and joined the animal health side, Elanco. This is where the literal part comes in because I actually got lost on dairy farms across the Dakotas. I dare say it was refreshing to visit large family farms and walk the lanes with farmers in boots up to my ankles in manure. While the smell was not my favorite, the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with multi million dollar farmers who are providing dairy for cheese, ice cream, and milk that graces all of our tables was a fresh opportunity for me. I embraced it. I assumed that was it, I'd retire there. Growing up on a farm and returning to that in my career was a full circle, end of story. Until a dear friend called me at 8PM one night while I was driving home from a large dairy farm and told me to come back to diabetes.
She explained a new job opportunity was going to be posted with DexCom, a company that focuses solely on CGM, continuous glucose monitoring, the one tool in my toolbox of treating my diabetes that has been life changing over the last several years. If you have a DexCom or are following someone who does, you understand what I mean by life changing. After a whirlwind of considering, applying, interviewing, accepting, and training, I find myself among new friends. And somehow, it feels like home to me.

Sure, the cows were great, but I know I can do the most good with people. People immersed with diabetes, not just selling in the space, but living with it or loving those of us who do. I don't have any other words to describe it but when I received a company email highlighting business updates and pictures from a national meeting, the image above brought a lump to my throat. I don't even know who these wrists with Apple watches monitoring blood sugars belong to, but I know we have something big in common. And the fact that DexCom gets that and thrives on that speaks to my soul.
And so, I've discovered I couldn't stay away from this thing I carry with me every moment of every day, that may very well be with me until I take my last breath, and that is okay. It took me leaving the industry of diabetes to realize it is home to me. Not the disease but the people who live it with me, among me, like me. It's good to be home...

"Stuck" with Eachother

I cannot even begin to explain how much I am loving this new succulent set from My Favorite Things! Stamping, water coloring embossed images, die cutting, oh this one is a must! So, we celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary last night and I had so much fun creating this card for Eric! The sentiments make the set! :)

Here's my finished card...

I stamped images with Versamark all over the background on watercolor card stock and would've loved using white embossing powder but we moved most of our stuff to a townhouse last weekend, some is still at my parents' place, the moving/building process continues! So, couldn't find anything other than clear embossing powder and I made it work. I used lots of Distress Inks to watercolor and finished it off with the sweet Stuck w Me stamp. Happy is from PTI and anniversary is from SC.

I dropped the stamp on the inside of my card while tripping over items in our moving process but that's the great thing about A) adding a stamped image over my mess up and B) a husband who won't notice! :) After 14 years still so happy to be stuck with him! I told him at dinner last night after 14 years, 4 houses, 2 daughters, 2 dogs, his two jobs and my 8, several in unique industries ranging from elementary teaching to animal health sales, our countless trials, even more amazing memories, and all the adventures yet to come, I know we were meant to take this journey of life together. And we will even make it through this crazy chaos of building a house!

Here's the set from My Favorite Things. When I ordered it only the pots die was available but I'm realizing I need the larger due set as soon as it's back in stock! Check it out herehere and happy Thursday!

Faith in Our Foundation

I mentioned in my recent post that we are busy with lots of usual life events but building a new home is taking a big priority among the usual chaos. Years ago I had found this idea to write Bible verses that stirred something in me on the foundation of your house while building. I loved the idea but never in a million years thought we would build our own house. Love to admit I was wrong and with the framing complete on the first floor, the girls and I had so much fun writing verses in all of the rooms on the main level! This first one is my absolute favorite right now, with a middle school aged daughter and 4th grade daughter, humility and kindness is a constant topic in our house so I wrote this one in the closets:

This one is in the office, another one to consider in our everyday lives among the work you do...

Both of my girls had so much fun writing on the frames with Sharpies, breaking the age old rule of not writing on the walls was a freeing experience for them! :) Graci wouldn't let me get a photo of her but here's Addi writing Psalms, Taste and see that the Lord is good, another good one in the kitchen...

Here's one for the front entrance and Addi added her doodles to it as well...
Eric wasn't finding the time to join in because he was busy checking out the actual foundation of the house versus our faith foundation so I wrote this one on the steps just for him! : )
And my absolute favorite from 1st Corinthians, a common verse that is in so many wedding ceremonies. I know it was one of our passages, was it in yours as well? I haven't truly read it since and that is almost 14 years ago, our marriage has gone through many challenges in those years and rereading this with an open heart confirms my faith in Eric and our marriage.
Building a house has been incredibly exciting and fun but also a bit stressful in addition to starting a new job in a completely different industry, living in temporary housing, not knowing where we are living in a month, trying to keep our daughters' lives as routine as possible among it all, and keeping up with all the other roles we all have as adults within our communities, friends, and family is a tall order. Writing that all out just made my heart jump a bit, how do any of us keep up with it all? I try not to think about it too much but one thing this verse impaticular reminds me is that there is no one else I would want to share this adventure with than Eric...
This is our final moving day as we loaded into storage our last items late January, a selfie, which I'm not typically a fan of, but felt it necessary to document, so excited to build a home for our family together, dreams coming true and feeling so very fortunate and blessed right here! Excited to share more of this journey with you all as roof is on and windows going in this week! :o)
Amen!

Hello Spring...So Good to See You!

Its been awhile. Whether you're stopping by for the first or you've been missing my craftiness and random antics regarding diabetes, welcome! Life has been beyond hectic, and while I know my world is no crazier than anyone else's, I must admit I have never experienced as much chaos all at once as I have been the last several months...all good stuff but all at once. This has made me question if it is possible to have too much goodness going on at the same time? While I'd like to think not, based on my recent personal whirlwind, I think it is very real and I will from here on out sincerely appreciate when I can say nothing is new, boring sounds extremely thrilling to me! :) Enough about my personal and joyful chaos of a new, fulfilling career, building a new house, and two daughters that are very involved and growing up all too quickly...lets get to some crafty goodness, one thing I've been missing with all the chaos and hope to make more time for very soon!
While we build our house we are living in my parents' villa, very appreciative to have a place to call home but 2 bedrooms with a hubby, two tween daughters and two labs is a bit tight which explains my lack of crafting. Excuse the mess in my picture but it was just fun to dump it all on the dining table and create!
First up, I made lots of these for our sweet nanny from a few summers back who is expecting her first baby very soon. Love the giraffe stamp from Papertrey Ink and the chevron cover plate, too. I always love giving thank your with envelopes that have postage on them to the expecting mom because it's one less thing she has to think about, getting thank yous sent for all the sweet gifts she's showered with during this magical time, and are always a great gift!

And next up, I've been wanting this alpaca stamp from Lawn Fawn since it was released several months back but with selling a house and moving to temporary housing I forgot about it and then it was sold out forever so I know spring is here but I just had to play with this one since I just got it! Simple card and love the new plaid paper from Lawn Fawn, too...so excited to do more with those papers in my new craft space!
It just makes me smile! :) So that's it for now...thanks for stopping by and I really do hope to get posting here more as life settles back to a new sort of routine. Now excuse me while I get back to watching my daughters compete at their dance competition, they had a break between sessions which gave me the time to write this long overdue post! So blessed with my joyful chaos! Hope you are, too!

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 10 & 11

Thinking if I do this next year I'll start my 12 days early so they don't actually fall on the busiest days of the season! :) Eric's sister was in town and a hotel with pool plus all the Breidenbach cousins equals getting home late! I should've known. But I've got a fun idea if you're a pallet lover...something I created this summer and hadn't had a chance to put on the blog so here is a Christmas tree for putting up outside and safer than hanging lights on your roofline! :)

I painted the pallet with a red stain the my neighbor, Amy, discovered this summer. Stain comes in lots of colors and the gray is something I'd love to try with a future wood project! Next I used scrap paper to literally build my tree, layering them until it was visually what I liked and spray painted it with a vibrant green. This was my favorite part of the project...

I added a star and paited a tree trunk. You could string with lights for your front porch or hang actual ornaments, so many possibilities! Sorry I don't have a picture of it on my porch but with a house for sale we've gotten rid of or given a lot to tidy up and this was on the given list. Can't wait to start crafting in our new home next summer! :)

Merry Christmas to you and your family! I hope your Eve is filled with joy and a heart full of gratitude! I am feeling especially nostalgic with this being our last holiday in this house and so many memories and blessings here!

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 9

Vacation officially begins tomorrow for me which is why it's almost midnight and I'm finally posting day 9! Girls are out of school and I'm off until the new year, just a few additional reasons why this is indeed the most wonderful time of the year!

We're building a home this spring and in the process of moving I've discovered several of our family Christmas cards from years past and thought it would be such a great layout!

So, here it is

Another one for the books! So fun to look back and especially see how the girls have grown! Such fun memories, so glad I found these while packing! Tomorrow the girls and I will be in the kitchen all day creating lots of edible goodness.

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 7

I didn't plan on making so many cards but there are so many fun techniques I've been wanting to try and it really is the easiest way to try, sort of like a mini project! :) So, today I used Distress Inks to create a sky scene and then used a dot mask to create a sparkly snow image with gesso...
The background turned out so pretty, don't ya think? I then used a few different sets to create a Christmas scene and hand cut a snowy slope from white card stock. I added my die cut house and fussy cut tree from the SU set and added the sentiment in red. Mounted on Pure Poppy from PTI and this was ready to go.
Can't wait to get this one in the mail! Stop back for more tomorrow! Can't believe this week is Christmas!!!

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Days 5 & 6

Just a few days in and I'm already slacking! Sorry to miss day 5 but my week ended with a bang as work didn't slow down at all and I literally ran right into the holiday festivities after finishing on Friday to make it over to our neighbors' in time for dinner and a limo to look at Christmas lights. Kids had a blast and the adults did, too! Needless to say, I wasn't up for crafting when I got home at 11 and decided I'd make it up to you all today with a home decor item that is super easy and so fun to do with the kids!
All you need is some patterned papers and I found an old frame that I sanded to age a bit and hot glued burlap onto the insert along the edges to keep it smooth but you could use a canvas, sturdy cardboard covered in paper or burlap, anything like that.
Next you cut strips of paper in pieces that gradually get smaller to build your tree. Roll each piece around a pencil, use a hot glue gun to secure and get all the rolls complete and stack them up to determine how many you'll need. My paper was from the holiday release at Stampin' Up and I die cut a small piece of paper that looks like wood for a trunk and used my Silhouette to cut a star from glitter card stock.
And here is the finished project sitting on the table in my foyer. Absolutely adore everything about this little creation! My youngest, Addi, asked if she could make one and it is that easy! I'll help with the hot glue gun but other than that she can make one of her very own for her bedroom. I have a feeling that will have a domino effect and Graci will want to make one for her room, too. So, looks like we'll be rolling paper into the wee hours tonight! Hope you'll agree that this is worth a missed day of crafting and I'll be back for Day 7 tomorrow, I promise!

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 4

Oh, my goodness! If you are searching for THE most adorable frozen creatures wrapped in sweaters or scarves, you must check out this set from Paperyrey Ink! Warmest Wishes with dies is what I used to inspire these Christmas tags!
Aren't they adorable? I die cut tags and stamped away, stamped the bear and fox on kraft and colored with my Prisma pencils. Using white to color on kraft made my polar bear pop. I can't get over the sweet sweater and scarf in Nordic print...and the simple box around the words...thinking poking holes in corners and putting twine through to recreate the lines would be a unique accent!
Here's each close up...

I finally had time to wrap a few last minute purchases so I'm going to put these on top with a bow so I can tuck them under the tree after the girls are tucked into bed tonight Tis the season! :)

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 3

Really love this one! I think it's country cute with the little critters from 3 different stamp sets. Amazing how many scenes you can create by mixing your sets up! The penguin is from Papertrey Ink and everything else is from a few different Lawn Fawn sets. A little doily in the background and a hand trimmed banner finish off the work. After mounting to some polka dot paper from Echo Park, reminiscent of snow, I added some turquoise and basic twine and liked it. But while cleaning up I found a scrap with rustic wood imagery on it and k ew it would be perfect! So I mounted my
4-1/2x5-1/2 inch card to the scrap of 4-3/4x6 and just love the final look!
If you have a few extra minutes try creating a scene with a few different sets and don't be afraid to mix brands. It's a great way to stretch the supplies you already have and even add new life to some older sets! Have fun and hope to see you back for Day 4!

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 2

I'm hoping to eventually become more disciplined with this craft habit but I cannot lie, I was tucking the girls into bed and it occurred to me that I'd made a commitment here yesterday and had yet to even think about creating something for day 2. So I grabbed some sweet reindeer paper that inspired me from SU and just dug in. A red diamond dot and some sparkly ribbon with a sentiment stamp was enough to get it done.
Cutting my patterned paper on an angle and adding my sentiment on that same angle is a fun way to add a new twist to what otherwise would be a very traditional card. I thought I needed more but once I added one red diamond dot, it was complete! This took me five minutes! I haven't been that quick with my crafting in forever and it was really freeing to not get hung up on it. Enjoy...I'm on a roll so hope you'll stop by and check out day 3! :)

12 Days of Crafty Christmas: Day 1

The countdown is on and it's crazy as usual around here. Sorry for the absence but I just can't seem to catch up with it all, like, ever, anyone else feel that way? Pretty sure that's just life but I thought, why not add a crafty Christmas countdown to my chaos because, well, it's fun! :) So, I'm trying my very best to show you a fun project every day until Christmas highlighting a product or technique to try.

First up, Prismacolor watercolor pencils. I've been using cheaper versions on pencils for coloring since this became a trend and just haven't loved the coloring which surprised me. So I took the p,urge with a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby and invested in a small Prismacolor pencil set, similar sets can be found on Amazon. I had a stamp set from Stampin' Up and wanted to make a few thank you cards for Christmas gifts. I had the circle dies from Lawn Fawn and planned it out.
And here's what I came up with for a few cards, with some help from Addison because, who doesn't love to color?

I didn't do the water coloring because I needed to knock these out quickly tonight but I did add some red glitter glue to the reindeer nose and ornaments to add some texture. My verdict on these pencils, so worth the investment! Smooth and easy to add more depth or shadow, excited to have time to play with hem more and hoping I'll have a chance to use them for a watercolor technique on the countdown. Hope you'll stop by again to check it out, with the rest of the craft countdown projects!

Sympathy and Blessings

Life is busy but the world does not stop moving! I don't expect it to, although every now and then I do have wishful thinking, especially when I have friends who are dealing with life events and I want to be there for them but my own circumstances don't make that a possibility. So, my next best option? Send a heartfelt handmade card!
A coworker's spouse recently lost her father and I wanted her to know she and their family were in my prayers with an autumn card. Fall is my favorite season with its striking colors and contrast and you can see His presence in the leaves before they land on the Earth, a symbol of something so grand! I recently got the leaf die from Papertrey Ink and did some water coloring for the leaves background to create that feeling for my sympathy card and used a Stampin' Up sentiment to finish it off with a few enamel dots.

I loved the way the first one turned out so decided to turn the same card into a thank you for someone that is long overdue! I switched out the sentiment with a newer one from Papertrey Ink and used gold embossing to add subtle texture. One card layout with two purposes is always a good thing!
I really enjoyed the process of these and hope you're counting your blessings and enjoying this beautiful fall season that God has blessed us with to savor before the snow starts flying! :)

Project Life...Catching Up from Summer

Hope you all had a fun and festive Halloween! It happens to be my favorite holiday behind my family favorite of Christmas! This year we had a hot dog, a baby, and a hunter in the family! If you want to check us out on my Instagram feed, ou can find me at sdbreidenbach.

So, here's some serious PL catch up, July, August, and September to be exact! I'm feeling pretty good about my progress considering November just started! :) I used a few branded kits to get these completed quickly! I bought a big stash of items recently because one of the last brick and mortar scrapbook stores near me recently closed because Lori, the owner and friend, decided to retire so I can't be too sad. Looks like online shopping may be a part of my crafting future!

July...

August...

And September...

Papertrey Ink October Blog Hop

It's only been um, eons, since I've had a chance to blog so sorry about being MIA but with a new job and listing our house for sale along with back to school chaos, the blog just had to take a backseat for awhile. So I figured a Papertrey Ink blog hop would be a perfect way to jump back in and why not get ahead on some Christmas tags in the process? :)

Here's the inspiration...

And here's some of the tags I created...

A picture of them all piled up, so excited that the holidays are upon us and had so much fun creating a few simple tags to adorn some shopping I've already started. Shhhh, don't tell my girls! :o)
Hope life is treating you all well and you're starting to get into the spirit with this fabulous inspiration and Papertrey Ink. It's always fun to look back at sets I've purchased several years back and get the same enjoyment out of them now as I did a few years back!

PS: Sorry about the bad lighting and that one picture that is not right side up, I waited until the end of my Sunday to create the tags and snap a few photos and just couldn't figure out how to move the picture right side up because it's been too long since I've been blogging! :o) I got a few PL layouts done this weekend, too, so I'll try to post those this week sometime! Happy hopping...
